What are SIM only plans?
A SIM only plan is one which provides you with a new SIM card and new tariff that you use with your existing phone (or any other phone). You keep the same phone and same phone number but move on to a different plan which will usually be much cheaper. SIM Only pans are quite new to Australia but have proved very popular in other counties and are likely to in Australia too.
Why are they cheaper than normal mobile contracts?
When you sign up for a contract with a new handset much of the monthly cost goes towards paying for that handset over the length of the contract. Since there is no new phone supplied with SIM only plans the monthly cost of the plan is much cheaper as the savings are passed on to you, the consumer.
Will I get a new phone?
No, you keep your existing phone or could buy a new one separately. Many people buy a SIM only contract and a phone from EBay which can be cheaper than signing up for a new phone and contract.
What about my phone number?
All SIM only plans let you keep your existing number though you can request a new one if you want to.
Is there a credit check?
Yes though this is usually much easier to pass than credit checks with normal mobile phone contracts.
Is SIM Only good for the iPhone?
Many people who are reaching the end of expensive iPhone plans are opting for SIM only as a cheap way to reduce their monthly bill and keep the phone they love. SIM only plans with unlimited internet or high data allowances are best for iPhone and other Smartphone users.
