SIM cards are the little cards that you place in your phone that enables it to get service. If your phone doesn’t have a SIM card, you won’t be able to make or receive calls, or have any other type of service. At one time you would purchase a mobile phone plan and the SIM card would come preinstalled in the phone. With these phones you would be unable to use any other provider’s card to get service to the handset.

International travel is another advantage of the plans that offer only SIM cards. If your phone is unlocked you can purchase a SIM only plan for the region of the world where you will be traveling. When you arrive, simply change out the card and you have local mobile phone service.
At one time it was necessary to purchase a disposable mobile phone when you were traveling, but thanks to the plans for SIM cards, you can get local service and still use your own mobile phone if your phone is compatible for that region.

You will pay for your plan month by month and you don’t have to sign a contract. This means that you can change providers after only one month of service if you are unhappy with the service you are getting.
When it comes to travel this flexibility is very important. You will likely only need your service for a short period of time and you certainly don’t want to have to sign a contract to get service. With the plans that offer SIM cards only, you can buy service only for the amount of time that you will be traveling, and return to your own service when you get home.
SIM cards are the way of the future; it is likely that mobile phone sales and plans will become something that is done separately so that the consumer has more freedom when it comes to choosing a service provider.
